If you use networking sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Plaxo or any other networking site then it is fair to say that as a professional looking to broaden your professional contacts, that you have information regarding your profession and if you are currently active in either of the afore mentioned theaters of operation then you may well also have photographs posted showing you and your buddies in action.
The afore mentioned group is a bona fide Jihadist (aka terrorist) group that is using Facebook to identify you and your friends for what is most likely targeting purposes – it is a known fact that various terrorist organizations including Al Qaida and the Taliban, have terror cells operating within the continental US, Canada, Europe, UK and other areas around the world that are assumed to be relatively safe. The truth of the matter is that you are not safe anywhere – especially when one need only visit a networking site such as Facebook to identify you and then target you. The terrorists that use networking sites for these purposes are extremely clever and often use fake profiles to befriend unsuspecting ‘targets’ – by the time you realize that John Smith who works for Armorgroup is actually Achmed Al Hussain and he operates for the locale Al Qaida cell, it is too late – you already arranged to have a beer with this guy in two weeks when you get back stateside on your rotation out of Baghdad!!
OPSEC and COMSEC are the order of the day gentlemen! Be ever vigilant of who you are talking to about your job because, although you may be protecting supply convoys and not participating in offensive operations – your presence in certain theaters of operation is seen by these Jihadists as that of an occupying force and as such are deemed as legitmate targets and relatively soft ones at that.
